Summary/Abstract: His article is devoted to the essence of human freedom as Erich Fromm, one of the most outstanding thinkers of 20 century saw it. Pointing to the contradictions rooted in humth an being (an individual is subject to laws of nature but at the same time crosses the boundaries for the sake of selfwareness) Fromm is considering the problem of human freedom in the context of this contradiction. That kind of perspective lets him perceive human freedom not only as a privilege or gift but also as a burden and the source of anxiety. On the one hand humans think highly of the possibility to define the scope of their existence, on the other hand they dread loneliness and responsibility. The struggle between these two tendencies – to expand the area of one’s freedom and to lose it – goes on throughout the whole human life. Freedom is understood in categories of process and challenge. This incessant war in human being is the reason why one of the most important educational tasks is to make a human understand his freedom and to develope it with a view to making this freedom serve life: love, creative activity and individual development.
