Summary/Abstract: Rafał Lemkin was born on 24 June 1900 to a Polonized Jewish family in a small village of Bezwodne near Grodno, in the Russia-dominated territories of partitioned Poland.1 His father was a farmer. All Lemkin’s biographers emphasize formative influence exerted on his development by his mother Bella née Pomeranz, a brilliant intellectual.
