Summary/Abstract: The article examines the reception of Nonnus of Panopolis’ poem “Dionysiaca” in the Russian culture of the 20th – 21st centuries. It is shown that the poem is the most complete ancient critical description of the life of the god of wine. It is suggested that the fate of the anti-Dionysian myth in modern Russian culture (just as the history of the publication of the poem “Dionysiaca” itself) is directly associated with the struggle between pro- and anti-alcoholic traditions. This exactly may explain the fact that in Soviet publications the god of wine is presented in a more favorable light than in the later interpretations of the poem.
