From the History of the Russian Znamenny Chant: Stages of Development and Historical Considerations

Summary/Abstract: This study is dedicated to historical and terminological considerations of this little-known church-singing tradition in Serbian science. Starting from the name, we are considering in detail what is meant by Russian Znamenny Chant, which later traditions are deriving from it, which are significant points in history of its development, and what was the destiny of this church-singing art through the history of Russian Orthodox Church. Exposed historical development of Znamenny Chant is placed into the context of Slavic church-singing art, musical literacy, musical manuscripts, part of which is also a Serbian church-singing tradition.
