Summary/Abstract: The article examines the problem of the status of ‘nationality’ in light of consular experience gained at the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Brussels. It is indisputable that the aforementioned issue is still evolving, in particular in the field of criteria required for acquiring a nationality. Among others, the article answers the question as to how this matter has been regulated in the Polish and Belgian legal orders from the time of creation of both these modern states until today. Furthermore, the article presents specific issues that consular officers encounter in their day-to-day work, the importance of nationality, its practical role in everyday life and the need to perform related administrative tasks, enabling the enjoyment of one’s civil rights in a given country.
