Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on differences between various legal forms of inter-municipal cooperation (IMC) inPoland. In particular, it looks at inter-municipal companies, as a highly institutionalised form often neglected in thestudies on IMC. Analysing their structure, we try to define the main composition-types of those units. We also analysisthe role of inter-municipal companies in the service provision, comparing it to the role played by other forms ofIMC. Our hypothesis behind these studies is that intermunicipal companies operate in different fields and with differentaims than inter-municipal unions – they are focused on current service provision (especially those of a privategood character) rather than on investments and absorption of the external funding – and that the companies are oftenderivatives of other forms of IMC.
