Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to study the cultural and literary strategies leading to the construction of a shared memory of the Rus’ during the civil war (986–990). The author off ers a rereading of little-studied epigrams: On the Bulgarians and On the plundering Iberians. Composed by the famous John Geometres at the end of the 10th century, these epigrams were previously perceived as a critique of politics of Basil II or the propaganda by supporters of Bardas Skleros and Bardas Phokas. Reexamination of these epigrams of John Geometres reveals the diff erent assessments to the participation of Rus’ in the civil war.
