Summary/Abstract: Although little has been written about Transylvanian painting on glass made by folk artisans, this kind and way of painting has been already drawn the public and specialists attention. The painting on glass became a major and representative genre in the Romanian folk art and more than this it is an important element in defining our national cultural identity.Sometimes, among the folk painters and their works on glass we may discover pieces wrongly assimilated to the icons on glass made on technique of reverse painting. They are reverse paintings on glass with religious themes and come from Bohemia, Moravia, Slovakia and Austria. They are specific to the area where the influence of the Catholic Church is current.The paper is focused on analyzing these reverse paintings on glass and draw attention upon these pieces. They belong to the European folk painting on glass. The Transylvanian painting on glass was much influenced by them and it developed distinctively for each centre.
