Summary/Abstract: This paper seeks to shed light on a specific aspect of domestic violencewife beating in the Sandzak region, southwestern Serbia. The paper draws upon data collected in the course of a study on women’s autonomy in the region. Violence against women in this area is closely linked to the institution of marriage, where related norms and cultural practices reinforce women’s powerlessness, exposing them to domestic violence.
