Summary/Abstract: The theme of this paper is an analysis of Roman funerary monuments from today’s Herzegovina containing a portrait of the deceased. In the introductory part, we thematized Roman funerary monuments as a medium for presenting social structures. Unlike most papers that approached monuments with portraits from the perspective of analyzing structure and iconography, we decided to analyze in this paper the social context to which the deceased belonged. Most of these monuments were found in the wider area of presentday Ljubuški and Konjic. Monuments with portraits from the Ljubuški area are associated with members of Roman auxiliary cohorts stationed at the Humac camp in the 1st century and veterans of the VII Legion who received land from Emperor Tiberius. The inscriptions from the portrait stelae from the Konjic area do not reveal which social structure the commemorated belonged to. Therefore, the paper focuses on the analysis of family relationships on the basis of monuments which depicts several family members, as well as their clothes, which is an excellent example of preserving domestic traditions.
