Greece and its New Immigrants. Features and Consequences of the Recent Immigration to Greece

Summary/Abstract: My paper seeks to explore some recent developments in Greece caused by the massive arrival of foreign migrants both to the urban centers and the agricultural periphery of the country. The paper will touch on three aspects of these developments. First, I present a short survey of postwar emigration from Greece to provide a better understanding of the country’s dramatic change into an undeclared but de-facto immigration country (without a coherent immigration policy) after 1990. Second, I will present a more general picture of the immigration process into Greece where different types of migrants with different legal and social statuses can be observed. Third, a more general issue will be discussed concerning the socio-cultural consequences of the immigration process. I want to investigate the question whether the well-established image of a homogeneous Greek nation is put into question as a result of the recent demographic develop- ments. In other words, the last section draws attention to the question of changing national identity in Greece. -------------------------------------- Seit den 1990er Jahren erlebt Griechenland einen großen sozialen Wandel infolge der neuen Einwanderung aus Südosteuropa, der ehemaligen Sowjetunion und aus anderen asiatischen und afrikanischen Staaten. Im Beitrag werden Erscheinungs- formen und soziale Folgen dieser neuen Einwanderungsbewegung nach Hellas untersucht. Im ersten Abschnitt wird der dramatische Wandel des Landes von einem entwicklungsschwachen Auswanderungsland zu einem de-facto Einwanderungsland anhand der verfügbaren statistischen Daten über die Bevölkerungsbewegungen der letzten fünfzig Jahre nachgezeichnet. Im zweiten Abschnitt wird die gegenwärtige Einwanderungsbewegung beschrieben und eine Typologie von Einwanderergruppen entwickelt. Dabei werden ja nach Einreisemodus und Aufenthaltsstatus vier Gruppen von Zuwanderern unterschieden. Anhand der verfügbaren Daten läßt sich feststellen, daß das Land seit den 1990er Jahren über eine Million ökonomisch motivierter Migranten aufgenommen hat und damit einen Migrantenanteil von 9,37% der Bevölkerung aufweist. Im dritten Abschnitt werden die Folgen der Einwanderung für das Land diskutiert, vor allem, ob der Wandel in der Bevölkerungszusammensetzung einen Wandel im Selbstbild und im nationalen Selbstverständnis nach sich gezogen hat. In Griechenland kommt es zu einer verstärkenden Umdefinition der nationalen Identität im Kontext der Veränderungen im Land sowie auf der ganzen Balkanhalbinsel.
