Summary/Abstract: The goal of the paper is to explicate the role of ensuring synergy in crisis management from the perspective of management theory and practice. It highlights the role of non-governmental organisations – such as Volunteer Fire Departments – within the crisis management system, and their impact on ensuring synergy effect in rescue operations undertaken by the National Firefighting and Rescue System. Based on the research findings obtained, an attempt was made to identify the negative factors that may limit the activity of the Volunteer Fire Department operations, which may translate into a reduction of the synergy effect in the functioning of the executive subsystem, and thus limit of the possibilities to provide assistance in emergency situation that threaten life, health, property and the natural environment.
