A Celebration of Romanian Culture and Spirituality: 440 Years since the Printing of Coresi’s Liturgical Book - Braşov, 1570

Summary/Abstract: Deacon Coresi offered to the Romanian culture a great gift: a Liturgical Book printed by him in Braşov, in 1570. It is the first translation and printing of St. John’s Liturgical Book, in Romanian language. Thus, the year 1570 marks the beginning of the long process of translating the Orthodox religious books from Slavonic and Greek into Romanian. Along the time, many other personalities of the Romanian Orthodox Church and of the Romanian culture, such as the Bishop Simeon Ştefan of Transylvania, the Bishops Dosoftei and Varlaam of Moldavia, the Noble Steward Şerban Cantacuzino, the Bishop Antim of Ungrovlahia, got engaged in this difficult, yet noble, work. Coresi’s Liturgical Book is considered as a milestone, which marks the end of a long period during which, due to different historical reasons, Romanians had to listen the Liturgy in other languages, considered as „sacred” – Greek and Slavonic. It also marked the beginning of a new cultural era: Romanian language got entitled to be used in its full rights. By his entire work, Coresi is considered one of the pioneers of Romanian literary language and one of the founders of Romanian liturgical language. The quality of the print, the beauty of the language and of the translation make Coresi’s Liturgical Book a liturgical, linguistic and bibliophile masterpiece, which deserves much more attention than it has received so far.
