Summary/Abstract: This article gives a short overview on the internal and external policies of Turkey during the reign of former Prime Minister and current President, Rejep Tayip Erdoğan, as well as, the explanation of his sudden political turnaround from a democratic to an extremely repressive regime. In the beginning, Erdoğan’s rule had a strong foothold in the New Foreign Policy of Turkey, created by Ahmet Davutoğlu. The traditional vision of Turkey was rejected by the strategic depth, while a new way of acting on the international political scene was defined with a clearly-grounded principle of „zero problems with neighbors”. Therefore, the Western Balkans is again found in the center of action. The longstanding political ambitions of Turkey towards this region have been awakened, whose roots reach the cultural, religious and historical ties to the former Ottoman Empire.
