Summary/Abstract: The system of the eight modes on which the entire early music of the Eastern and Western Church was composed and ordered is studied according to the primary sources of the manuscript collection from the library of St. Catherine's Monastery on Mount Sinai. The oldest sources of this collection designed for chanting show that before the appearance of the notated pieces in the 9th century, the oktoechos system was already in use and displayed a high level of organization. Questions addressed herein include: what were the oldest books assembled with medieval chant repertories (until the 13th century), how did these repertories grow, how have they been arranged and re-arranged according to the liturgical calendar, which were the genres included, and how, finally, have they been transmitted in the Eastern world from Jerusalem to the Studite monastery near Constantinople in one of the oldest hymn books - the Tropologion.
