Summary/Abstract: Significant differences in the views of scientists, politicians, landowners and land users on the future model of the agricultural land market in Ukraine create contradictions in the society. Despite the fact that Ukraine has set up a base for the land market formation, the issues of forming the market value of land, rent, setting limits on the boundary sizes of land owned by one person, determining the optimal size of land use, and insufficiently formulated bases on land use are controversial. The increase of employment and reduction of unemployment of rural population in the conditions of functioning of the land market also partake a divisive character. The land market is vital for agriculture and rural residents. It enables to pass land from less efficient to a more efficient owner and as a result the land can be used as a pledge for agricultural enterprises and a source of income for pensioners and other sections of rural population. The experience of foreign countries shows that further development of land relations is required to ensure an effective development of economic agro-formations. The absence of a genuine agricultural land market hinders effective distribution and long-term investment in land and agriculture in general.A detailed analysis of the history of land relations in Europe leads to the conclusion that the agricultural land market has the right to exist, but it requires careful substantiation and significant restrictions. Only the most important restrictions should be considered: prohibition of excessive concentration of land; the right to have land by those who work on it; avoiding creation of land latifundia; limitation of land fragmentation; reservation of land for public needs and the like. The issues of social life of the Ukrainian village should be solved together with the reform of land relations, elimination of the disproportion in the employment of rural population, provision of social protection and real income of the population. The creation of the agricultural land market will facilitate the approval of private land ownership.
