Size alteration and restoration of a Barbizon frame for the painting „Pridvor la Sinaia” by Nicolae Grigorescu (M.A. Craiova)*

Summary/Abstract: In this article Mr. Cornel Rosca describes size alteration and restoration works that he and his team performed, in 2017, to an old Barbizon frame, in order to make it suitable for a painting by 19 C Romanian impressionist master Nicolae Grigorescu. The original frame was lost over time and replaced with this unusual Barbizon frame that was some 3 cm too large to hold the painting without help from mending plates and a bronze painted cardboard line extension meant to hide the emptiness around it. The frame, which was a good choice as far as its age and style were concerned, had to be diagonally cut down to size and then restored without leaving any perceptible signs of intervention. For this purpose frames corners had been copied first then the frame was cut to size and rejoined, new ornaments were cast and placed at the corners. Because the frame was also crooked, and its front lips were hopelessly out of alignment, a new liner had been created and inserted in place. Finishing and matching were last steps there.
