Summary/Abstract: The paper analyses the history of two agricultural cooperatives in the Szatmár/Satu Mare region, North-West Romania. The Hungarian ethnographers from Transylvania dealing with the Romanian postsocialist transformation of rural areas have hitherto focused on family farming. In their papers, cooperative forms of agriculture appeared only as untapped opportunities or unsuccessful attempts. The purpose of this paper is to provide information about how cooperatives could survive until now – through the example of two villages. What are the factors that made this possible and how did they affect the economic and everyday life of the local society?
