Summary/Abstract: The paper explores the denotative, connotative (particularly metaphorical) and symbolic meaning of window from the perspective of social semiotics. Windows may be viewed as architectural signs, but at the same time they can be symbolically regarded as the eyes of the house. Together with doors, windows are markers of boundaries, dividing space into outside and inside, but at the same time making the boundary potentionally permeable. Their function is more passive and static than the function of doors. The different meanings and functions of window are related to different contexts and cultures. These meanings are interpreted in everyday life, in architecture, in literature and in art in general.
