POST-GRADUATE STUDIES – A CHANCE OR TROUBLE FOR UNIVERSITY?

Summary/Abstract: The article brings up the issue of educating the PhD studies in the light of arrangements of the Bologna Declaration and Polish law regulations. It indicates expectations of the organizers and participants (among the academic community) connected with the PhD studies. It pays attention to the problem of the organization of PhD studies (the status and responsibilities of PhDs, methods of financing the studies). It emphasizes the challenge the universities undertake to organize the third cycle of higher education. The article describes the mission of PhD studies, the abilities which the postgraduates should acquire and informs about the discussion, dedicated to the matter of educating PhDs, which is going on at the University of Warsaw. It also presents the opinions of academics taking part in the discussion concerning the mission, the shape and the organization of postgraduate studies at the university.
