Summary/Abstract: The article presents a historical overview of general geographical lexis in differentSlavic languages. The purpose of the paper is to demonstrate a varied approach tomaterial study, principles of its processing and analysis. The attention has been paidparticularly to the lexicographic study of common vocabulary, and scientific comprehensionof the segment of dialectal vocabulary under study in individual regions ofUkraine. At the same time, the theoretical principles and methodological approachesto the analysis of collected and reviewed national geographical lexis in Ivano-Frankivskregion have been looked into. The conditions, peculiarities and the results ofthe investigation with stage-by-stage analysis of actual material are presented here.The classification of the names of geographical objects concerning the relief andwater and their parts has also been introduced. They are characterized in a hierarchicalorder according to the following scheme: 1) class (2), 2) thematic group (5),3) lexical-semantic group (40), 4) semantic microfield (97). National geographical lexis has been analyzed synchronously.
