Summary/Abstract: In a previous study (Velichkov et al. 1998) stable individual differences in nSaf were found and they are related to differences in emotional reactivity in danger and safe situations. In this study we examine how people estimate potential risk for unpleasant events to occur in dark empty places. Independent variables are level of nSaf, degree of knowledge of the place and isolation from potential availability of other people. Additionally, correlational links between nSaf and 5 preventive behaviours are examined. For each independent variable significant main effects are found indicating that when in unknown place and in isolation from other people subjects expect more danger than when in well known places with potential availability of others. The estimated risk in all situational contexts is significantly lower for individuals who are also low in nSaf In contrast individuals with enhanced and high levels of nSaf prefer to face such places having equipped by means for protection and being accompanied by other person. These data show significant differences in perception and interpretation of situational context between individuals low in nSaf and all other levels of this drive.
