Summary/Abstract: As a profession, intelligence has existed for millennia. As an academic discipline, it has existed for only a couple of decades. This discrepancy is due to the esoteric character of the domain. In a way, it is only natural that such a large quantity of data existing about processes and structures, which are assumed to be secret, should not permit the in depth or scientific analyses of intelligence. The evolution from and towards intelligence services creates a flux of knowledge, but also a critical methodological device which is so necessary for the intellectual effort of studying intelligence not only in an empirical way but also in a theoretical way.
