Summary/Abstract: Saint Photios, Patriarch of Constantinople, in the Controversies of his Time and in Present Historical-Theological Research. The theological thought, the Orthodox testimony and the missionary activity of Patriarch Photios – largely rehabilitated by the western historiography of the 20th century – have proven to be of exceptional paradigmatic and typological value not only for the evolution of theological disagreements between western and eastern Christianity, but also for their long awaited agreement. For saint Photios dogmatical acriby and ecclesiastical economy were perfectly compatible, both being manifestations of the same “Spirit of Truth” and of the same love. The Photian council of 879-880 – which condemned Filioque not only as a wrongful addition to the Creed, but as an erroneous doctrine in itself – has been considered to be an ecumenical council by its very participants, because it had all the required elements which define the ecumenicity of a synod.
