Summary/Abstract: A person, as a human being, has his or her own natural rights. These include, among other things, the right to life, to express one's views and the right to privacy. These rights are fundamental and indisputable. Among them is one of the most important liberties – the right to religious freedom. While one of the most important principles, its simplicity and naturalness raise at the same time many doubts. This study aims to provide a general presentation of the principles of the right to freedom of religion: the origin and history of the formation of this right and the road to its sanction. This article also discusses the chief contemporary documents which guarantee this freedom and the rulings of the European Courts of Human Rights in cases concerning infringement of religious rights.
