Summary/Abstract: The study reports on the theoretical and methodological frameworks for competence assessments conducted among students entering the University of Szeged (Hungary) between 2015 and 2018. It also discusses the main results of those assessments. Based on our analyses, it is clearly possible to develop a computer-based assessment system covering both cognitive and affective areas to determine initial knowledge level and motivation among those commencing their university studies as well as providing immediate feedback. In addition to supplying students with personalized comments on individual strengths and areas for improvement, the results contribute to the development of faculty-level strategies to improve scholastic achievement.
