Summary/Abstract: The aim of the present paper is to understand how individuals use their free time and to sum up the main activities of leisure in Romania. First of all, I present a schematic overview of the history of time use surveys. Then I discuss their relevance in both sectional and longitudinal researches. The importance of sectional studies on time use is very useful in describing the main ways in which individuals use their (free) time, and also to register differences in allocation of time between individuals, considering their gender, age, residency or social status. Longitudinal studies provide the opportunity to capture very clearly the social changes and the contexts in which they happen. Starting from the data provided by Time Use Surveys (2001, 2013) and Eurostat, I try to capture the differences (and inequalities) in time allocation, considering the gender, age, residency, social status and country of the subject.
