Summary/Abstract: Chinese narrative theory has been largely influenced and inspired by its Western counterpart, yet its particular contributions to narratology are beginning to catch the eye of Western academia and helping to ‘redefine the field’. As a rejoinder to such narratologists as David Herman, Ansgar Nünning, John Pier and Bronwen Thomas, this article attempts to take a close look at the fate of narratology, postclassical narratology in particular in China. It mainly pursues three major goals: to revisit the distinction between classical narratology and postclassical narratology; to review the translations and interpretations of postclassical narratology in China and to present Chinese scholars’ contributions to postclassical narratology. The article concludes with some tentative suggestions for future development of Chinese narratology along the postclassical line.
