Summary/Abstract: The Republic of Bulgaria first recognized the independence of the Republic of North Macedonia after the breakup of Yugoslavia and provided comprehensive assistance to stabilize its southwestern neighbour. On August 1, 2017, an Agreement on friendship, good neighbourhood, and cooperation was signed. One of the key points in its text is the establishment of a common ground in the history of the two countries. However, the Macedonian side does not fulfill the contract exactly and consistently. This prompted the Bulgarian National Assembly to vote on 10 October 2019 a special declaration confirming the conditions under which The Republic of Bulgaria would support the accession of the Republic of North Macedonia to the EU. In this regard, a “group of intellectuals” from Skopje wrote a detailed objection, which was sent to the European Commission in Brussels.
