Summary/Abstract: The paper Professional Diseases of Potters. The Influence of Lead Glaze on the Human Body synthesizes the conclusion of a study which evaluates the health condition of potters from Horezu. Horezu is one of the most important pottery centres from Romania. The study was conducted during the summer months of 2008. The author focused mostly on the hazardous effect of lead glaze on the health of craftsmen living in Horezu. The conclusions are alarming: out of the eleven people tested for lead concentration in their blood, only two subjects displayed normal levels, the others’ lead concentration rising beyond 40 u/dl - which is the concentration legally permitted in Romania. The study conducted in Horezu will be continued in the other pottery centres of Romania. Eventually, the conclusions will be presented to the authorities with a view to issue measures and laws to protect the health of these “ masters of clay”.
