Summary/Abstract: The latest developments from the political stage and economic relationships in the CSI area proved the importance of the energy resources in a global world which also depends upon a relatively low number of energy providers. This paper intends to resume the main elements granting strategic importance to the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus and the current confrontation of strategies and interests of the great international actors which are politically, military and economically involved in the area. The first part of the article reviews the strategic relevance of the Caspian Sea area, starting with the issue of energy resources and describing the parameters of a great strategic game in the area. The second part of the paper focuses on the profiles of the confronting actors that in the area, ranging from national states to international organizations. An important part of the paper reviews the interests and strategies of the main players that have strategic roles in the area: the US, the Russian Federation and the European Union. The final part deals with conclusions.
