Summary/Abstract: The basis for reflection on the idea of democracy as well as its systemic functioning in Poland is a collection of articles edited by Maria Szyszkowska, titled "Democracy in the twenty-first century". Presenting some theoretical positions, among others philosophical reflections of A.L. Zachariasz, S. Symotiuk, T. Kozlowski on democracy, the author also points out the practical issues related to the functioning of democracy in Poland, among others taken by lawyers and journalists. In this context, in analytical and critical part, the author emphasized the importance of the issues taken by M. Szyszkowska, and the initiatives in the socio-political life of Polish society.
