Summary/Abstract: In this book review, the book by Amit Bein titled Ottoman Ulema, Turkish Republic: Agents of Change and Guardians of Tradition has been evaluated. An expert on late Ottoman and Early Republican Turkey, Bein studies the competitor Ottoman ulema, their thoughts, institutions, struggles, and legacy elaborately in this work. Contrary to the mainstream works on late Ottoman and Early Republican Turkey, which envisage the Ottoman ulema as reactionaries or victims of the related period, in his book Amit Bein portrays them as historic figures in many aspects and considers them in many ways. This work is an important contribution to the field and praiseworthy since it has a scientific understanding, critical awareness, balance, and a broad perspective to the Ottoman ulema.
