Summary/Abstract: The number of exegetical works that have survived from the formative period of tafsīr is extremely few, and, therefore, our assessment of the formative period has been informed by the works that are composed by the beginning of the tenth century and remained extant today. The foremost among these extant works is the tafsīr of al-Ṭabarī, which has been viewed as the father of tafsīrs and in light of which the formative period of tafsīr has been presented within the most widely circulating modern histories of tafsīr. However, some new tafsīr works that have lately been discovered and published revealed that al-Ṭabarī actually conveyed the heritage of the formative period according certain criteria of his. Thus, we began questioning the historical picture presented to us in our modern tafsīr histories. With this review article, we strive to bring to attention the necessity of questioning the information presented to us in our sources.
