Summary/Abstract: The article tracks the idea of repentance in the Old Testament and Apocryphal wisdom literature represented by passages using the Greek terms metanoeō and metanoia, according to the Septuagint translation and original Greek compositions alike. In the late period of the Second Temple and beside the Deuteronomistic idea of a turn-away from idolatry, focusing on social behaviour and on the question of how to behave, as well as on the situation of permanent distress resulted in the understanding that a human being can hardly be righteous, which caused a strong need for expressive repentance. The first ever Estonian translation of the Greek version of the Prayer of Manasseh (according to Rahlfs’ Gottingen Septuagint edition) together with its theological and poetological analysis and a comparison with the Syriac Didascalia version closes the article.
