Summary/Abstract: Dynamic socio-economic and culture changes occurring in the postmodern society cause that more intense phenomena and processes appear, which make one consider the condition of autonomy in general and autonomy of universities and scientists in particular. The ongoing transformations have become the inspiration to discuss the autonomy from the grassroots perspective, of the local society researcher – from the perspective of a small “local-government university”. In the article I try to indicate the influence of creating the relations: university – local self-government authorities – business (local economy) – local society, which, as I suppose, have the crucial role as to building the position and the role of the university in the environment, thus gaining the informal autonomy as well as setting its framework. My considerations, in the empirical part, are based on the example of the Jan Wyżykowski University in Polkowice. The recommendations are not to be perceived as the generalizations, yet they serve as a model of good practices and case study.
