Summary/Abstract: The migration crisis faced by the European Union in 2015 showed that both European states and institutions had serious deficiencies in managing such a situation, a fact that has fuelled a kind of nationalistic populism, an identity populism, in several member countries. Representatives of identity populism have entered national parliaments and governments through democratic mechanisms, they have influenced the political discourse and nourished the perceived insecurity of the population, a reality that cannot be ignored by the security strategies of states. The present paper aims to show that populism represents a risk to the national security of the European states in which it manifests itself. Like economic populism, which we find especially in Latin America, identity populism can destabilize the institutions of the democratic state and can generate conflicts. Keywords: identity populism, identity politics, nationalism, migration, national security, conflict.
