Summary/Abstract: The analysis of the relationship of emotions and art is of crucial importance for the humanities. The interest concentrates both on the emotions of the artist and the viewer as well as symbolic forms of representation of emotions present in works of art. Most recently psychology has defined and employed four independent theoretical models of emotions. The article is an attempt at exploring various kinds of the representation of emotions in works of art in the context of these models. It offers new modes of interpretation of a work of art as a medium of emotional content that exceeds the most basic aesthetic feelings, organised from biologically conditioned responses to culturally worked out symbols. These interdependencies were illustrated by the works of a British artist, Damien Hirst.
