Summary/Abstract: This paper describes and analyses four textbooks of the Orbita set used in the past in elementary schools of Montenegro and Serbia, along with the sets of Давайте дружить!, Родничок, and Диалог. In the first place, it reviews all the elements that encourage and develop metacognitive knowledge in students, with regard to the aforementioned set, and it also points out the relevance of the metacognitive function, which constitutes one of nine general principles of planning and organising textbook contents, contributing to a great extent to better designing and conceptualising a contemporary textbook of Russian as a foreign language.
