Summary/Abstract: Within psychological and technical discourses, the rejectionof a prosthesis is typically analyzed as a failure to accept one’sdisability, an expression of trauma and shame, a result of a faultyproject, and the excessively high costs of maintaining theprosthesis. This article suggests that the rejection of a prosthesismay also be a political gesture, a manifestation of one’s identity,not so much an expression of a lack of acceptance for one’s disabilitybut just the opposite – its celebration. When a prosthesis becomes a symbol of the medical domination over a disabledbody, opposing it transforms into an act of resistance against thesocial and medical practices of normalization.
