Summary/Abstract: Smart specialisation is about selecting specific domains, setting priorities related to present and future development and generating unique capabilities based on the specificity of industries and knowledge assets of regions and countries. This paper presents the concept and attributes of smart specialisation. It analyzes the links between smart specialisation and eco-innovation. In particular, the possibilities of support for eco-innovation development within regional smart specialisations in Poland have been examined. The study has indicated research and innovation strategies for smart specialisation with diverse approaches to eco-innovation activities, from reactive to proactive ones. However, in some regions implementation of smart specialisation may bring notable eco-innovation-oriented activities ensuring valuable contribution to the Europe 2020 agenda.
