Summary/Abstract: The primary purpose of the article was to identify reasons for which people do not lend money to their family members, whereas the secondary objectives were as follows: to discuss the selected conceptions of selfishness in terms of pro- and antisocial behaviours and also to present the characteristics of a statistical Pole, who does not agree to play the role of a family lender. The following research methods were applied: critical analysis of the subject literature, statistical methods and a diagnostic survey. The empirical data originate from the nationwide surveys carried out in January 2016. The author’s own research demonstrates that in 2015 approx. 27% of Poles refused to grant a family loan. They are represented by a childless young man, holding a lower education level, residing in a village in Lubuskie or Kujawsko-Pomorskie region, with a monthly income at the level of PLN 2001–3000. Among the most frequently listed reasons given by the respondents while refusing to grant a family loan the following were identified e.g.: an attempt to avoid conflicts resulting from financial reasons (26%), concerns that the borrower will have to be reminded about returning the debt (19,5%) or that the loan will never be repaid (10,7%), trying to avoid financial losses (4,9%) or the need to requite for the previous refusal of a loan (3,0%).
