Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the lexical meaning of the nouns "mąż" and "mężczyzna" in 16th century Polish language. The author refers to a variety of texts to show how both words were used in the language and how they are understood today, owing to which it is possible to notice essential changes in the meaning, scope of usage, markedness, syntax, productive word formation, and paradigm of both words. The analysis also contains a review of the derivatives of both appellatives.
