Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the theoretical assumptions and methodological concerns of spoken language research, describing the caveats of recording and transcribing, as well as the ethical concerns of research on human subjects. On the basis of 11 examples of verb forms that are currently used as pragmatic action-implementing particles in Estonian conversation, the article argues for the necessity of a consistent interactional analysis of those linguistic items within the general framework of routinization and grammaticalization. In conclusion, it is emphasised that something should be done about the currently predominant visual illiteracy.
