Summary/Abstract: The article contains an overview of the differences and similarities in the functions of the verbal and visual communication systems, a discussion of their historic relations, and some speculation about their possible development in the future. Also, the somewhat language-like traits of visual communication are analysed, questioning the alleged universal nature or even prelinguistic communicative ability of the latter. In conclusion, it is emphasised that something should be done about the currently predominant visual illiteracy.
