Summary/Abstract: Subject of research in this article is the state of Bulgarian-Chinese relations during the “80s”. In the first part of the study, the historical events from 1982 to 1991, a period coinciding with the second stage of the reform process and the opening of China to the world, marked by the decisions of the XIIth Congress of the CCP – the formulation of the need to builds “socialism with Chinese specificity,” in which the “xiaokang” thesis – the creation of a medium-sized society in China – is decisive. Particular attention has been paid to the construction of numerous Economic and Technological Development Zones, whose main purpose is to attract foreign investment, to stimulate exports and to develop high technology. The second part of the study draws attention to Deng Xiaoping‘s far-sighted foreign policy in the 1980s – the last years of the Cold War (1981–1984) and the subsequent Helsinki Process for Security and Cooperation in Europe (1985–1990), which led to the fall of the “Iron Curtain”. A special place in this part of the study is dedicated to the “special status” of the two regions, which are administrative and territorial units within the PRC based on the principle of “1 state – 2 political systems”. The focus of the third part of the study is on the “new era” in Soviet-Chinese relations since 1985, which also reflects the bilateral relations of the People‘s Republic of China – PR of Bulgaria. The fourth part of the article follows in chronological order various Bulgarian-Chinese bilateral initiatives towards normalization of relations, given the “new political situation” and the necessity of “rethinking” the relations between the People‘s Republic of China and Bulgaria. The final part summarizes that during the period our bilateral relations are already “pragmatic” and striving to avoid the ideological attitudes of the past.
