Summary/Abstract: Aim of the study was the analysis of obesity among oncological patients and healthy women. Obesity is a significant problem for public health in highly developed countries. According to the WHO, the proportion of people with obesity has tripled since 1975. In 2016,over 39% of adults were overweight and 13% were obese. Overweight and obesity may increase the risk of cancer: large intestine, gall bladder and hormone-dependent cancers: breast, endometrial, ovarian, prostate and thyroid cancer. Probably the impact of obesity on the increased risk of breast cancer is due to the increased production of estrogens, whose source inthe post-menopausal period is primarily fat tissue. The analysis was based on preliminary results of a clinical-control study, 119 women with diagnosed breast cancer and 118 healthy women were examined. The research tool was an anonymous and voluntary questionnaire. The analysis showed that oncological patients were more likely to be overweight and obese, compared to the control group. Over half of cancer patients and only 16,9% of healthy women hada BMI above 25,0 kg/m2. Significantly more women from the study group (26,9%) had BMI≥30,00 kg/m2, in the control group it was only 2,54%. The normal weight (BMI: 18,5-24,99kg/m2) was found in 40,4% of oncological patients and 78,8% of healthy women. Limiting the overweight and obesity epidemic is one of the biggest challenges for Public Health. Balanced diet and systematic physical activity have a significant impact on reducing the risk of breast cancer.
