Summary/Abstract: The article concerns the relations between selected variables in the area of business management and the development of the SME enterprises in Poland. These variables include:the importance of developing a company’s strategy, the importance of modern manage mentmethods, the importance of integrated ERP management systems, and the importance of information and telecommunications technologies, including websites and online stores. Basedon a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), it was found that the surveyed enterprises can be divided into those that are oriented towards improvement and change, as well as those that are traditionally and intuitively managed. Enterprises of the first group show significant innovative activity, actively improve their management system and market offer. This is accompanied by a highly-rated competitive position. Enterprises of the second group in these dimensions have low values. The key observation, however, is that in both groups the financial condition may be as good as it is bad. Modern management does not have to be the only way to achieve good economic results by SMEs of the SME class. Data from the 43,3 thousand of small and medium-sized enterprises in Poland were used for the study.
