Summary/Abstract: Sustainable development gains more approval in the modern economy, which requires treating the environment as a value in the production process on an equal footing with capital and work. In order to fulfil the resulting tasks, the key problem is to improve the competitiveness of modern enterprises, which is interactive and constitutes a combination of interlinked factors. The current stage of transformation is described as technological restructuring, as it consists of changing the internal structure of elements of the existing system and is mainly of a qualitative nature. As a result, the possibility of implementingeco-innovations, ensuring on the one hand an increase in environmental effectiveness and on the other hand an improvement in conditions of enterprise competitiveness, becomes extremely important. However, modern approaches limit the concept of eco-innovation to activities aimed to improve the efficiency of resource use rather than competitiveness of the whole economy, which may result in the risk of shifting environmental problems from one area of economic activity to another. Sustainable development requires a holistic approach to all processes taking place in the economy and taking into account not only direct but also in direct effects of applied solutions
