Effectiveness of Investments in Socially Responsible Companies

Summary/Abstract: Nowadays, one of the important factors affecting changes in running a business is the idea of sustainable development and the related concept of corporate social responsibility. Socially responsible companies implement concepts and management methods based on good relations with business partners, the company’s environment and its employees. In the case of public companies, responsible business activity additionally strengthens the principles of corporate governance. Against this background the questionarises whether the implementation of the concept of corporate social responsibility is appreciated by stock exchange investors and whether it has a beneficial effect on the market value of the companies. The article attempts to answer these questions on the basis of a study involving the analysis of the investment portfolio created among the companies included in the RESPECT Index. It has been shown that those investing in shares of socially responsible companies achieve an above-average rate of return.
